From Your Pastor's Heart - March 13, 2016

Good Morning!

This Tuesday is an election day for Missouri.  I must be totally honest with you, I am at a loss.  I am so troubled by the tone of this political season.  We have never seen this type of political rhetoric in my lifetime; and there has been some pretty nasty “politicking” in the past.

But, this year on both sides we are seeing the worst in most of the remaining candidates.  I sat on Friday night watching the news seeing the anarchy in Chicago at a political rally where one side used their right of free speech to shout down the other side’s exercise of the same.  The anarchy caused by many on the left in our country is a political strategy used by communists and leftists for decades to create unrest to further their causes.  We saw an example of that on Friday night.

But, what we are seeing on the right is also appalling.  As candidates talk about other candidates physical features or call them demeaning names, I fear this is a signpost that we are entering a new chapter in America where what little civility we had left is quickly slipping away.  I suppose that is what is bothering me the most.  We are on such a downgrade as a society, that watching the political events in this presidential race just breaks my heart.

But, I fear that the lack of civility is just the tip of the iceberg in the coming months.  I am not a prophet, but I can say for certain that we are looking at a presidential election season like no other...ever!  I have studied our founders quite a bit and found that although they had spirited debate over substantive issues, there was a general sense of civility.  Even George Washington, by the age of sixteen had a list of Rules of Civility that he tried to incorporate into his life.  If you have internet access, look up the below address for further reading on Washington’s Rules:

So, we go to the polls on Tuesday, recognizing that, most likely, one of the individuals running will be the next president, barring an indictment for the Democratic front runner or a brokered convention for the Republicans.  Both of those scenarios could bring presidential candidates that are not even presently running.  I am at a loss as I believe most of you might be.  I know I cannot support a candidate that will for certain appoint pro-choice judges, so that should narrow the field in half for followers of Jesus.  As for what is left for us to select from...well, we have to wade through whether we believe what they say, the content of their character, and what we believe the Lord would have us do.  I will pray for you on Tuesday and I pray you lift me up as well as we exercise our duty as citizens and Christians to vote.

As always, my prayer is that we would all, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.”         II Timothy 2:15

Humbly Yours,

Bro. Steve
