From Your Pastor's Heart - November 8, 2015

Greetings Family!

Today is a very important day in the life our church family.  We have invested two Sunday mornings and one Sunday evening recently in looking at the dangerous movement of the Southern Baptist Convention leadership over the past 15 years or so.  It has been a painful task for me to share these things with you.  I know you have also shared in my disappointment with the direction of the convention and its leadership, missions, and publishing arms.

As I have told you, although coming to Christ at 20 years old, I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church and what we have been seeing and are witnessing taking place in the convention is not Biblically based.  Those who call themselves Baptist can trace their origins back to the time of the early church as we hold to the “common faith once delivered” as spoken of by Jude.  It is clearly evident that the Southern Baptist Convention has left commonly held and Biblically based doctrine behind and in essence has theologically stepped out of bounds and continues to push hard in that direction.

Now, in this letter I cannot reiterate all the ground we have covered in these past weeks, but this move into mysticism, the hyper-charismatic, and the new apostolic movement has troubled us all, as well it should.  I have presented the evidence and those you have elected as leaders among you have confirmed the veracity of the truth of this slide into this dangerous blend of new teaching from the convention.

As your shepherd, I am called to love, protect, guard, and lead you.  So, today I boldly stand on God’s Word and lovingly ask you to come alongside and stand on God’s Word as a church family today as the Church Council brings a very important motion for the future of FBC today at the end of our service in a special called Business Meeting.  You know my heart and I pray you know how hard this has been for me.   I also know how painfully difficult this is for those of you who have also been affiliated with the SBC for, perhaps, your whole life.  But, God’s Word is the only thing on which we must stand.  In this present situation, we must cling to the Bible.

This vote is not like voting on the color of carpet.  This vote today is one that I must share my heart with you and boldly ask for you to support.  I have heard your hearts as well in this matter and am truly blessed by a people that hold the Scriptures in the highest esteem and I am confident we will do the right thing together and continue on in our mission as we are...First BAPTIST Church of Cape Fair.

As always, my prayer is that we would all “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  II Timothy 2:15.

Humbly Yours,

Bro Steve

Dr. Steven Gann
